When I bought my 7D in 2010, I knew I didn't wanted buy a kit lens. By in large, most people who buy DSLRs get the kit lens. I instead bought the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and EF 50mm f/1.4. I tried out the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS but was not impressed with the full-stop difference compared to my 17-55mm and 70-200mm.
I like to start articles by stating my expectations, because, like everyone, my expectations going in color my opinion after seeing the results. Given Canon's recent series of home-run lens upgrades, I expected the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 IS II would be a superb lens.
